Kanne mit Netzkugel. 1943.
Watercolor and ink pen drawing.
Lower right signed. Titled on the reverse. On firm wove paper by Schoellershammer (with the truncated blindstamp). 68.5 x 49.7 cm (26.9 x 19.5 in), the full sheet.
• For the first time on public display during the artist's lifetime.
• Large mature work in harmonious and warm colors.
• Schmidt-Rottluff created a particularly fascinating composition through the unusual perspective, the strong contours and the expressive play of light and shade.
• The year this work was made, Schmidt-Rottluff found rest and inspiration in his hometown Rottluff (Chemnitz), he spent the summer in the remote town of Rumbke on Lake Leba on the Baltic Sea.
The work is documented in the archive of the Karl and Emy Schmidt-Rottluff Foundation, Berlin.
