Der Wanderer. 1922.
Etching.
Gercken 1309 III (of IV). Dube R 407 III (of IV). Schiefler R 395. With the estate stamp of the Kunstmuseum Basel (Lugt 1570 b) and the hand-written registration number "R 395 III". Verso also numbered "174" and inscribed with the data from the catalogue raisonné by a hand other than that of the artist. One of to date nine known copies of this etching and the only known copy from the 3rd printing state. On off-white wove paper. 18.1 x 30.2 cm (7.1 x 11.8 in). Sheet: 30,6 x 42,3 cm (12 x 16,7 in).

• Another copy of this etching was offered on the international auction market more than 30 years ago (source: artprice).
• Other copis of this famous etching are at museums like the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. and the Kirchner Museum, Davos.
• The year this work was made, Kirchner also made a painting with a similar motif (Aargauer Kunsthaus, Aarau).
• In 1917 Kirchner sought medical help in Davos, and Schwitzerland would eventually become his new home and source of inspiration for his entire late creative period.
The work is registered in the Hermann Gerlinger Collection with the number SHG 787 a.

Buchheim Museum, Bernried (permanent loan from the Hermann Gerlinger Collection, 2017-2022).
In good condition consistent of the age. Paper with minimal isolated stains and slightly irregular mount staining. Margin with very few barely visible crimped spots and isolated unobtrusive pressure marks. Upper and right margin with a small superficial paper blemish, upper corner minimally rubbed. Lower margin slightly irregular.
